At least 3 dead in suspected vendetta shooting on Crete

[InTime News]

A suspected vendetta-style shooting left at least three people dead and 10 injured on Saturday in the village of Vorizia, on the southern slopes of Mount Psiloritis near the city of Iraklio on the island of Crete, local media reported.

The attack is believed to have been carried out in retaliation for a bombing late on Friday that targeted an under-construction house in the area, police said. The homemade explosive device detonated at around 11.30 p.m., causing extensive damage but no injuries.

Early on Saturday, unidentified gunmen reportedly opened fire on homes, cars and residents in what authorities described as a possible revenge attack. Local media said thousands of bullets were fired and that the assailants were armed with Kalashnikov rifles. It remained unclear whether the shooting had completely stopped.

Among the injured were several children, according to local reports. Some were taken to hospitals in private cars and farm vehicles as ambulances were unable to reach the area amid ongoing gunfire. Emergency services have mobilized almost their entire force, but police have not yet given clearance for crews to enter the village to collect any remaining wounded.

Officials have not released details about the victims. It was also unclear whether a police operation was under way or if any suspects had been detained.

Vendetta-style feuds, though rare, occasionally erupt in rural Crete, where long-standing family rivalries sometimes escalate into violence.
