The German government has welcomed “positive” signs after China said it would ease an export ban on chip maker Nexperia.

Netherlands-based, Chinese-owned Nexperia manufactures its chips in Europe, sends them to China to be finished and re-exports them to European customers.

But China imposed export controls after the Dutch government effectively took over the company in September, citing security concerns.

On Saturday, Chinese authorities announced that some Nexperia chips would be exempt from the export ban.

“The latest reports from China are positive initial signs of an easing of tensions,” a spokesperson for Germany’s Economy Ministry told the AFP news agency.

However, they added that it was still too early for “a final assessment” of Beijing’s decision.

Nexperia is a major supplier to Europe’s automotive industry, meaning any supply chain disruptions could impact Germany’s economy.
