Toronto Maple Leafs rookie Easton Cowan finally got his first career goal, scoring the team’s fourth of the game in a historic milestone for the young forward.A game removed after seeing one historic milestone for the Toronto Maple Leafs with John Tavares scoring goal #500, Saturday night saw another when rookie Easton Cowan finally got his first career goal after an assist from Tavares, wiring a shot past Flyers goalie Dan Vladar:
It was a gorgeous shot from the rookie who had several good chances all night and finally was able to capitalize early on the third period.
Also, as happy as Cowan was, it seemed like Tavares may have been even more excited for the rookie’s first marker:
It helped give Toronto an even bigger lead at 4-1 in the third, and chased Vladar from the game, who had been solid all year before running into trouble against the Maple Leafs.
It’s not like Cowan has any issues scoring, as he had 220 points in his London Knights career, and over his last two seasons put up an incredible 165 points (63 goals, 102 assists) and won pretty much every personal accolade he could.
In getting the first of his career, it will hopefully bring in a lot more confidence not only for Cowan, but for the Maple Leafs who now can rally around their rookie and ride the positivity and momentum into a winning streak.
Coincidentally, he did it facing off against a former teammate at least in training camp at one point, in Nikita Grebenkin, who has yet to score his first NHL goal, and if he could do so would make for quite the story on Saturday night.
Although Cowan’s goal is a momentous occasion, it may be overshadowed a bit by the Toronto Blue Jays and their quest for a World Series, but it’s certainly a moment that no one should forget.
Grab that puck, Easton. It’s your first goal of many, many more to come in your NHL career.
