A 28-year-old man from Kitchener is facing multiple charges after police said someone broke into a women’s prison Sunday night.
Waterloo regional police responded to reports of a break-and-enter at the Grand Valley Institution for Women on Homer Watson Boulevard at approximately 8:30 p.m. Sunday night.
Through an investigation, police said a man climbed the fence and gained access to the yard. The man allegedly assaulted two people once he was inside the facility.
The two victims reported minor physical injuries.
The man was charged with break and enter, two counts of assault and mischief under $5,000. He was held for a bail hearing, police said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police or call Crime Stoppers.
A spokesperson for Correctional Service Canada (CSC) told CBC News in an email that an individual illegally gained access to the site and two inmates were assaulted.
The facility was immediately placed on lockdown to ensure the safety of inmates and staff, the spokesperson said, adding the lockdown was lifted early Monday morning.
“To prevent unauthorized entry, the institution maintains perimeter surveillance and access control systems, supported by trained staff and technology to detect and deter potential breaches,” the spokesperson said.
“In this case, once the perimeter was breached, the perpetrator was quickly apprehended and detained by CSC until the Waterloo regional police arrived and made the arrest.”
The spokesperson said CSC will review the incident and “take appropriate measures.”
