It was difficult to miss Joey Scandizzo and Jade Kisnorbo’s salon in the Crown marquee earlier in the spring racing carnival.

More than a hundred racegoers lined up throughout Derby Day on Saturday to get their hair and make-up touched up after perspiring in the blazing sun.

But oh, what a change a few days can make.

Instead of blue skies and sunshine, Cup Day has brought overcast weather that threatens to flatten blowouts and streak eyeliner. But fear not because there are ways to avoid feeling like a drowned rat by the final race.

“On a day like today, it’s best to get your hair up, keep it slicked back and keep it off your face,” says Scandizzo, co-founder of global haircare brand Eleven Australia.

“Keep it polished – super sleek and shiny.”

As for make-up, celebrity make-up artist Kisnorbo says it’s best to avoid any intricate eyeshadows and instead opt for a bold eyeliner look.

“Eyeshadows can move around. Eyeliner doesn’t budge,” she says.

“And this year, it’s all about lips. Not a red lip, but a contoured lip, so lip liner is probably the number one thing we are touching up. We’ve been sharpening those pencils.”

Regardless of the weather, their salon has been the busiest it has ever been.

People aren’t looking for more of the same thing, either.

“Past years were more beachy and a bit more organic and undone, but now everyone wants to feel expensive,” Scandizzo says. “So, it’s all about volume and polished hair.”

Given the price of some of these marquee tickets, it’s no wonder everyone wants to look like money…
