To avoid the road closure, motorists have been told to follow the hollow circle diversion symbol.
The route will take people off the M6 southbound at junction 13, then onto the A449.
Follow the A449 until the A5 junction at Gailey and then take the A5 eastbound.
Continue on the A5 before rejoining the M6 at junction 12.
Commuters should be warned that heavy traffic has built up on parts of the diversion, including the A449.
A spokesperson for National Highways added: “If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”
