Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) – NEA Horonobe International Project (HIP): Interim Report for Phase 1 (February 2023 – March 2025)
The NEA launched in February 2023 the Horonobe International Project (HIP), which uses an underground facility for the research and development (R&D) of geological disposal.
The aim of this project, located in the town of Horonobe in Hokkaido and supported by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), is to develop and demonstrate the advanced technologies to be used in a repository’s design, operation and closure; to provide a realistic safety assessment of deep geological disposal, which is recognised as a common international challenge; and to encourage and train the next generation of engineers and researchers by sharing and transferring a knowledge and experience developed to date by relevant organisations worldwide.
