Armed police are on Hopper Street in central Wellington and a cordon has been set up on Wednesday.

About a dozen police officers and half a dozen police cars are lining the street.

Cordons are also in place at the intersections of Webb and Hankey streets, police said.

The northern end of Hopper Street has reopened but the street remains blocked off south of the intersection with Arlington Street.

A police officer turning cars around at the cordon told a driver they can’t let anyone through.

“It’s imperative to your safety and the safety of others.”

RNZ understands police are executing an arrest warrant.

An onlooker whose car is inside the cordon said officers had been there for about half an hour.

They said there were reports of someone ‘kicking off’ in an apartment up the street.

A resident of a Hopper Street council housing complex said police have barred him and his neighbours from entering.

RNZ has contacted housing provider Te Toi Mahana, who took over management of a housing complex on Hopper Street this week.

A staff member was unable to comment on the current police presence.

Members of the public have been asked to avoid the area.
