The two Rovers stars had to be substituted in the closing stages at Ashton Gate. That was the only sour note in what was otherwise a fantastic victory.

Ismael watched his side control the first half and get a deserved lead through Yuki Ohashi just before half-time. The second 45 was far more of a scrap but Rovers limited Bristol City to very little.

It came at a cost, though. Wharton was taken off on 82 minutes with an ankle injury and Balazs Toth was then withdrawn in stoppage time with a knee issue.

“We need to assess the situation because we paid a big price for the win with two injured players for tonight,” Ismael said.

“Scott is his ankle and Balazs is his knee, so we need to assess. We have three days now to recover for the next game before the international break.

“It doesn’t look good at the minute, so we need to assess to have more clarity.”

The victory meant it’s three in a row for Rovers in the Championship. Contrasted to the mood at Ewood Park two weeks ago, it has been a remarkable shift.

All four of Rovers’ away wins have been with clean sheets too. Despite not showing the same level of control in the second half, neither Toth nor Aynsley Pears had a save of any significance to make.

“I think we showed two faces today,” he assessed.

The first half was very solid, under control, played good football, scored the goal brilliantly, like we expected. So everything was under control and the second half was just a fight.

“We lost too many balls, put Bristol City back in the game, but they didn’t have a big chance to score, which is good, we were really solid away.

“So we had to fight to win a lot of duels with better quality in the transition, maybe we can finish the game earlier. No, another forceful performance away, another clean sheet, which is good for the confidence after the win against Leicester.

“We showed some solid performance away, really good. We knew that the performance was always right since the beginning of the season.

“We were really solid on the front foot, we didn’t get the reward and now we start to pick up points. So the picture now is right with the performance and we’re picking points.”
