A 35-year-old man rammed his car into pedestrians and cyclists on the French Atlantic island of D’Oléron, wounding ten people, including four seriously, a prosecutor said.

The local resident “deliberately hit several pedestrians and cyclists” along a road joining two towns on the scenic island off the city of La Rochelle, prosecutor Arnaud Laraize said.

Police on Ile d’Oléron said the driver of the car was arrested.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said on X, said that he was travelling to the scene at the request of the country’s Prime Minister.
