Voters on US Election Day gave Democrats resounding victories in key races that not only reveal public sentiments around Donald Trump and his policies, but also offer the party a roadmap for regaining congressional control in the 2026 midterm elections.

The democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani secured over 50% of votes to become New York City’s next mayor, despite Trump’s threats to pull funding over his win. Voters also approved three ballot measures aimed at tackling the city’s housing crunch by easing roadblocks for new developments. In neighboring New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill defeated a Trump-backed candidate in the race for governor, while Virginians elected Abigail Spanberger to replace current Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin.
