Cold weather is on the rise in Metro Vancouver, which means so are your utility bills, but BC Hydro is offering you a chance to get a pretty nice credit.
BC Hydro is offering customers a $100 credit, and getting it requires one small task.
Beginning on Nov. 1 and running through Jan. 1, 2026, BC Hydro Customers can log in to their online account to take on a reduction challenge.
The challenge is a pledge to reduce your hydro usage by 10 per cent over the next year. If you are able to meet the goal successfully, you’ll earn a $100 bill credit or an e-transfer, which is double the usual $50 reward.
BC Hydro says that over 75,000 B.C. residents activated the $100 reward, “resulting in energy savings of 19 gigawatt hours, enough to power more than 2,500 homes for a year.”
“The highest number of activations came from the Lower Mainland region of B.C., where more than 47,000 customers took on the 10 per cent electricity savings challenge.”
If 10 per cent seems like a lot to reduce your usage by, BC Hydro says it’s easier than you think and offers some tips on getting there, including:
Using a programmable thermostat to reduce heating when you’re away or sleeping
Sealing drafts around windows and doors to prevent heat loss
Using LED bulbs
Using energy-efficient appliances
Installing low-flow shower heads
Washing clothes in cold water
Using smaller appliances instead of the oven when you can
If you become a Team Power Smart member, you also get access to other contests and deals throughout the year.
The BC Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation once offered an affordability credit that provided the average BC Hydro residential customer with savings of $100. That credit program ended earlier this year.
