Airlines are canceling flights after the FAA ordered flight reductions to take effect on Friday.
The FAA is requiring a 10% reduction in flights in busy markets in order to maintain safety.
Chicago O’Hare and Atlanta had the most flights canceled on Friday, according to Cirium.

Airlines across the United States are canceling flights to comply with the Federal Aviation Administration’s mandate to reduce flight capacity.

The FAA on Wednesday ordered flight capacity to be reduced by 10% in 40 busy markets starting Friday. The cuts are intended to maintain safe skies as the government shutdown drags on and air traffic controller shortages persist, causing continued delays.

According to data from Cirium, an aviation analytics company, hundreds of flights scheduled for Friday had been canceled as of Thursday evening, resulting in a 2% reduction in the total number of flights scheduled for that day.

Nearly 150 airports had at least one departing flight canceled as of Thursday evening, according to Cirium data.

Chicago O’Hare International Airport had more flights canceled than any other airport, with 33, while Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport had 32 flights canceled, according to Cirium.

Major airlines have said they expect most of their flights to go ahead as planned and are advising passengers to continue checking their flight status.

Here are the 20 airports with the most cancellations on Friday, and how many flights were canceled, according to Cirium data:
