Toronto police say a man has been arrested in connection with a deadly shooting that took place in the city’s downtown core two years ago.
Officers were originally called to the area of Sherbourne and Shuter streets on July 25, 2023, at approximately 12:14 p.m., for reports of a shooting.
Police say a man was found inside a vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim was later identified as 36-year-old Mohamed Ahmed, of Toronto. Ahmed was also the brother of internationally recognized Toronto poet and musician Mustafa the Poet.
Mustafa Toronto-based Mustafa Ahmed posts photos of his brother who died earlier this week on Instagram (Mustafa the Poet).
Investigators previously issued warrants for Mohammed Abdullahi, 34, and Yasir Mohamed, 27, both of Toronto, each wanted for first-degree murder.
Now two years later, police say on Nov. 7, members of the Toronto Police Fugitive Squad located and arrested Yasir Mohamed.
He is charged with:
First-degree murderPointing a firearmUnauthorized possession of a firearmAssault with a weaponPossession of a firearm contrary to prohibition orderTwo counts of failing to comply with recognizance
It should be noted that both of the accused were also previously listed among the top 25 most wanted fugitives in Canada, according to the BOLO program.
None of the charges have been tested in court but police say Mohamed was scheduled to appear in court at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre.
Officials say 34-year-old Mohammed Abdullahi remains outstanding.
