Vancouver Canucks Head Coach Adam Foote gave an update on Friday regarding Thatcher Demko after the organization called up a netminder from the AHL.After dealing with countless injury issues between April 2024 and the end of the 2024-25 season, reports indicated that the Vancouver Canucks were going to limit Thatcher Demko’s workload for the 2025-26 campaign, ideally keeping him around the 45-50 game mark rather than having him in the 60+ range.”Vancouver enters this season with a significant investment in net, one that sets Demko up to be as rested as possible for the pointy end of the campaign when the games matter most. With Kevin Lankinen in tow on an expensive contract for a 1B netminder, the Canucks are hoping to manage Demko’s minutes and keep him in and around the 50-start mark this upcoming season.” Thomas Drance said back in early September.

Vancouver Canucks’ Adam Foote gives update on goaltender Thatcher Demko

When speaking with reporters on Friday afternoon, Adam Foote said that the organization told Thatcher Demko to take care of himself in the offseason and when he needed some time off, especially with the NHL’s condensed schedule this season due to the Olympics, he would get what he needed.

Based on what Adam Foote is saying, it doesn’t sound like there is any injury to Thatcher Demko, which is great news for the Vancouver Canucks given how well he’s played for the club to start the season.

“We asked him this summer to take care of himself, and know in a condensed schedule when he feels he needs time off. And that’s what he’s doing.” Foote said.

Foote wouldn’t confirm or deny if Thatcher Demko could be an option for the Canucks this weekend as they take on the Columbus Blue Jackets and Colorado Avalanche at Rogers Arena tonight and tomorrow.

“Sounds like it’s just part of a maintenance plan with Demko. They play back to backs this weekend and good to have Patera there. Demko doesn’t need to be on the ice every day. We’ll see where it goes.” Irfaan Gaffar said.

For Thatcher Demko’s long-term health, it’s not a bad thing to give him a few days off here and there, when the club is able to, and for this weekend, giving Kevin Lankinen and Jiri Patera a start each would be the best plan.

It would allow the San Diego native to have four full days off, including Monday as it’s unlikely they’ll practice after back-to-backs, and sets him up for a return to the crease on Tuesday night in an all-Canadian clash with the Winnipeg Jets.

In nine games this season, Demko has a 5-4-0 record along with a 2.57 goals against average and a .912 save percentage.
