WASHINGTON—The decision by eight members of the Senate Democratic caucus to side with Republicans to advance a bill Sunday night to end the government shutdown drew heated condemnations from other members of the party and reopened longstanding divisions on how best to fight back against President Trump.

The vote result also put new scrutiny on the leadership of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.), with left-leaning critics saying the defections showed he couldn’t keep his troops in line.
