Tributes are pouring in for the titan of talkback radio, John Laws, who has died at the age of 90.
For seven decades it was tradition for families across Australia to tune into the man known as the Golden Tonsils each morning, as he hosted everyone from politicians to royals, tradies and truckies on his talkback radio program.
Nine entertainment editor Richard Wilkins had the privilege of calling Laws a close friend and shared detail on one of the last times he caught up with the Aussie icon.

“It’s hard to do John Laws justice – I mean, he had this wonderful gift of communicating, he was blessed with an amazing voice, a magnificent voice which resonated with us and it held so much gravitas,” Dickie said.
“But the one the funny thing about going to lunch with Laws, even though he had this magnificent voice when he spoke into the golden microphone, it boomed around the country, over lunch in a crowded restaurant, I found myself leaning forward asking him to repeat himself because he would tell these wonderful stories.”
With a clear plethora of fond memories of Laws, Dickie recalled a couple of fun lunches he had with him, including one which involved jetting off from Sydney’s Otto restaurant on a golf cart.
