Almost 3,000 Donegal sheep farmers are to share a pot of €2.7 million under the national welfare scheme.

Pat ‘the Cope’ Gallagher has welcomed the allocation from the 2025 National Sheep Welfare Scheme.

The one-year initiative is designed to assist farmers in producing better quality animals while implementing practical animal welfare measures on farms.

“Our sheep farmers are custodians of our land and contribute enormously to our local economy, as well as being recognised internationally for their work,” Deputy Gallagher said.

“I am especially pleased to see the increase in the payment rate from €8 per ewe to €11.50 per ewe. Combined with the €12 per ewe available under the CAP Strategic Plan, farmers will now receive up to €23.50 per ewe – a 17.5% increase on last year. This represents a significant support for farming families across the country.”

Nationwide, over 13,000 farmers will benefit from this year’s scheme for those who chose the completion date of 17 October for their actions. A further pay-run will take place in mid-December for farmers with a later completion date.

Concluding, Pat the Cope Gallagher thanked farmers for their ongoing dedication and commitment to animal welfare.
