BELÉM, 10 November 2025 – The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) officially inaugurated, in partnership with the EU and Germany, its ASEAN Pavilion at the 2025 UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP30). Marking its debut at the prominent global climate forum, the Pavilion carries the theme “ASEAN’s Global Mutirão – From Regional Solidarity to Global Action.”
In his remarks, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, Secretary-General of ASEAN, highlighted the significance of the ASEAN Pavilion as a platform to demonstrate ASEAN’s strong commitment to multilateral climate action, “The ASEAN Pavilion will showcase ASEAN’s leadership in accelerating the energy transition, enhancing climate finance, mobilising private sector participation, scaling nature-based solutions, and advancing just transition approaches.”
Echoing this message, Datok Nor Yahati Binti Awang, Deputy Secretary General of Environmental Sustainability of NRES Malaysia representing Malaysia as the ASEAN Chair, and Mr. Joseph Teo, Chief Negotiator for Climate Change, Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment of Singapore representing Singapore as the Chair of the ASEAN Working Group on Climate Change (AWGCC), welcomed participants and highlighted that the ASEAN Pavilion represented an opportunity to profile the region’s climate ambitions, while serving as a platform for ASEAN to engage Partners and other stakeholders on ways to support shared climate goals.
“This Pavilion and the Joint Statement together showcase ASEAN’s “One Voice” in climate diplomacy. We are clear, coordinated, and forward-looking.”
“We hope that the inaugural ASEAN Pavilion will be successful in sharing our region’s collective climate actions, ambitions, and unique challenges. Beyond this, we hope that it will serve as a key platform for our Dialogue Partners and stakeholders to engage with ASEAN, understand our priorities, and find new ways to support our shared climate goals.
Meanwhile, Ms Diana Acconcia, Director for International Affairs and Climate Finance, the EU’s Directorate-General for Climate Action (DG CLIMA), reaffirmed the importance of ASEAN-EU cooperation in driving forward ambitious climate action, and the important momentum in EU-ASEAN relations on climate, including thanks to the 1st ASEAN-EU Ministerial Meeting on Environment and Climate Change in September 2025, in Langkawi, Malaysia. The ASEAN Pavilion setup in partnership with the EU is a concrete result of this enhanced EU-ASEAN engagement.
”Today, we are not here to conclude this important year of EU-ASEAN relations on climate, but to keep up the momentum for our enhanced cooperation to continue. And also to show the world (here at COP) that working together pays off.”
The opening day brought together representatives from ASEAN Member States (AMS), the EU and other ASEAN partners in a celebration of ASEAN’s collective spirit and contribution to global climate efforts – reflecting Brazil’s “Global Mutirão” ethos. ASEAN’s regional solidarity, rooted in centrality and cooperation, reinforces its commitment to implementing the Paris Agreement through both national and regional actions. The session also presented ASEAN’s shared climate priorities, common narratives, and alignment with the COP30 Action Agenda.
The ASEAN Pavilion will open throughout the duration of UNFCCC COP30, from 10 to 21 November 2025, serving as a strategic platform for dialogue, collaboration, and partnership on climate actions among ASEAN Member States and its partners. In collaboration with key stakeholders in the region, numerous events in line with the COP30 thematic areas will be hosted in the Pavilion to contribute to the COP30 Presidency priorities and global climate agenda.
ASEAN Pavilion at UNFCCC COP30 is supported by the ASEAN EU-German Climate Action Programme, a project funded by the European Union (EU) and Germany, and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, in partnership with the ASEAN Working Group on Climate Change (AWGCC) and the ASEAN Secretariat.
