Clare champions Éire Óg booked their spot in the Munster semi-final on Sunday afternoon, overcoming Waterford’s Rathgormack on a scoreline of 0-20 to 1-13 in Páirc Chiosóg.
This was a hard fought contest, one in which the less fancied Rathgormack would stay in the mix right up until the very end. Éire Óg would lead by three points at the interval, although the two sides would find themselves level midway through the second half.
In the end, the composure of Clare inter-county star Mark McInerney in the closing stages would prove to the the difference between the sides.

Mark McInerney would produce a stunning performance in this game, contributing 0-16 of his side’s 0-20. That tally included one two-pointer from play, as well as three two-point frees.

The Clare star would also come up clutch towards the end of the game. With the two sides level midway through the second half, he would kick 0-5 in the final 15 minutes or so to drag his side across the line.
Having scored 0-7 in the club’s county final victory last month, this is the latest in a strong run of performances from the forward. Speaking ahead of the Munster campaign, McInerney admitted that provincial honours was the goal over the remainder of the year:
We probably haven’t been happy with how we’ve performed in Munster, especially last year against Loughmore.
They were the better side and we didn’t perform. We’re going to be giving it everything here now.
We’ve got a special group here together and we’ve got a chance.
Éire Óg’s task in Munster is only going to get more difficult over the coming weeks, with Tipperary champions Clonmel Commercials awaiting them in the semi-finals. They came up short against previous Tipp winners Loughmore-Castleiney in the 2024 edition of that competition.
Should they win that game, they will face either Dingle or St Finbarr’s in a provincial final. A few more performances from Mark McInerney such as this one would certainly do their chances of winning a first even Munster football crown no harm.
