On Tuesday, November 11, many services across Halifax will close or operate on modified schedules as Nova Scotians pause to remember those who served.
Transit and parking
Halifax Transit buses and the Alderney Ferry will run on the holiday schedule.
The Woodside Ferry will not operate.
At 11 a.m., all buses and ferries will pause for three minutes of silence.
Free transit will be offered to veterans, serving military members, and their families. Uniform or ID required.
Paid street parking will be free for the day.
Recreation, libraries, and municipal services
Most municipally operated recreation centres will be closed.
All Halifax Public Libraries branches will close for the day.
Groceries and retail
Major grocery and retail stores—Sobeys, Atlantic Superstore, Walmart, and Costco—will be closed.
Halifax Shopping Centre and Mic Mac Mall will also close for the day.
Some smaller stores such as Gateway Meat Market, Kingswood Market, and Arthur’s Urban Market plan to remain open.
Alcohol sales
All NSLC stores will close.
Private liquor retailers including RockHead Wine & Beer Market, Harvest Wines & Spirits, and WestSide Beer Wine Spirits will open from noon until 8 p.m.
Many craft breweries and distilleries will open their taprooms later in the day.
Waste and recycling
There will be no curbside collection of garbage, organics, or recyclables on Tuesday.
Tuesday’s collection will move to Saturday, November 8.
The Otter Lake Waste Facility and Materials Recovery Facility will be closed Tuesday but open Saturday.
The Household Special Waste Depot will be closed Nov. 8 and reopen Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Pharmacies
Most pharmacies and drugstores will remain open, though hours vary by location.

The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents of the following municipal program and service level adjustments for Remembrance Day on Tuesday, Nov. 11.
Solid Waste
There will be no garbage, organics or recyclables collection services on Nov. 11. Curbside collection regularly scheduled for Nov. 11 will instead occur on Nov. 8. Residents are asked to place materials curbside prior to 7 a.m. on collection day to guarantee pickup, ensuring items are contained and secured from wildlife.
The Otter Lake Waste Management Facility and Materials Recovery Facility will be closed on Nov. 11, but will be open on Nov. 8 for regular hours of operation.
The Household Special Waste Depot in Bayers Lake will be closed on Nov. 8. It will be open on Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Halifax Transit bus and ferry services
In recognition of those who serve our country, Halifax Transit is offering free transit to all veterans and military personnel, and their accompanying family members, on Remembrance Day on Nov. 11. Veterans and military personnel wishing to use the free transit service are asked to be in uniform or display their military identification upon boarding. This offer extends to Halifax Transit bus and ferry services, as well as registered Access-A-Bus users.
Buses will pull over at 11 a.m. to pause for three minutes of silence to honour and remember those who served and continue to serve.
Halifax Transit buses and the Alderney Ferry will be operating on holiday schedules on Nov. 11. Woodside Ferry service does not operate on holidays. For detailed holiday schedules by individual route, visit our website.
Recreation facilities, programs and services
Most municipally operated recreation facilities will be closed on Nov. 11. Residents are encouraged to call ahead to their respective facility for operating hours and program information. Contact information for municipally operated facilities is online.
Parking
On-street paid parking will be free on Nov. 11. Drivers are reminded to abide by other posted signage, including no stopping, accessible parking spaces and no parking zones.
Customer Contact Centres
The 311 Contact Centre will be closed on Nov. 11 for full service; however, urgent calls can still be reported. Regular operating hours will resume on Nov. 12. Residents can reach 311 by phone, or by emailing contactus@311.halifax.ca
In-person Customer Service Centres will be closed on Nov. 11. Customer Service Centres will reopen with regular hours on Nov. 12.
