A Status Yellow rain warning is in place for many parts of the country with Met Éireann warning of the potential for localised flooding.
The alert covers counties Cork, Kerry, Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Waterford, Wicklow and Tipperary.
The forecaster said that heavy rain could bring localised flooding, poor visibility and difficult travelling conditions.
From 6am, a similar warning went into place for counties Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry in Northern Ireland.
The UK Met Office said that persistent and at times heavy rain may lead to some travel disruption and brief flooding.

The warning ends for Cork and Kerry at 2pm.
The warning for counties Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Waterford, Wicklow and Tipperary expires at 5pm, while the warning for Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry ends at 9pm.
