Ukraine and Russia have given conflicting accounts of fighting around Myrnohrad.
The embattled city is just 6km to the east of Pokrovsk, a key target of Russia’s troops in their push westward to capture the Donetsk region.
What does Ukraine say?
Reports of Myrnohrad being fully surrounded are not true, an armed forces spokesperson said on Monday.
Major Andriy Kovalyov told news portal Ukrainska Pravda that reports of the Ukrainian supply lines being fully within range of Russian weapons and claims of the city’s operative encirclement were false.
Ukraine’s military also said it had delivered supplies into Myrnohrad and rotated out troops fighting in the town, including those who were wounded.
“Ukrainian units are confidently holding their positions and destroying the occupiers on the approaches to the town,” it said in a statement on Facebook on Monday. “Logistics to the town are complicated, but are being carried out.
What does Russia say?
Russia’s Defense Ministry, writing on Telegram, said its forces were pressing an advance on Myrnohrad and noted gains in two of the town’s districts.
On Monday, it repeated its claim that Ukrainian forces had been totally cut off in both directions.
What do we know?
A live map of the front by the Ukrainian DeepState monitoring group shows Myrnohrad nearly completely surrounded by a gray circle marked “Unknown” control. It shows just a small gap in the circle still in Ukrainian control.
The map shows Russian forces pushing towards Myrnohrad from both the east and southwest.
DeepState uses open-source reports to track the positions of Russian and Ukrainian troops,
Why is Pokrovsk so important?
The city of Pokrovsk and neighboring Myrnohrad sit in Ukraine’s east in the Donetsk region.
Ukraine has long viewed Pokrovsk as strategic because of its road and rail connections. It sits on the junction of several major roads and is also an important rail junction.
As for Russia, controlling Pokrovsk would bring President Vladimir Putin one step closer to completely controlling the Donetsk region.
