Gardaí are investigating a shocking incident of a lit firework placed in the letterbox of a home in Ballybofey.
The lit firework was shoved into a house at Blue Cedars on the evening of Saturday the 8th of November.
Two youths were reported to have approached the house at the time (7.15pm).
Moments later, the firework exploded inside the letterbox and caused some damage.
“Thankfully, the damage was not as bad as it very well could have been,” said Garda Gráinne Doherty, who described the incident as “very concerning”.
“That could have escalated and had a horrendous outcome altogether.”
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and are urging anyone who travelled within Blue Cedars between 7pm and 7.30pm on that date with a dash-cam to contact Gardaí in Ballyshannon on 071 9858530.
“If anyone saw two youths on foot in that area on Saturday evening or if they can assist with any relevant information, we ask them to please make contact with us,” said Gda Doherty.
Garda Doherty also called on parents to speak with their children about the danger of fireworks.
“We are not placing blame on parents, but asking them to speak to youths about the seriousness of their actions.”
The Garda Confidential Line may be contacted on 1800 666 111.
