A forbidden driver with no license dobbed himself in after his car ran out of petrol in the middle of a central Dunedin street.

The 44-year-old went into the Dunedin Central Police Station to explain himself and left his car blocking Filleul St at 11.50am, Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said.

He went to the station to ask for advice but also admitted that he did not have a license and was previously forbidden to drive.

His car was towed and he was summonsed to appear in Dunedin District Court.
