The crew of a Donegal fishing boat did their best to save their colleague who died after falling overboard off the coast of Arranmore yesterday afternoon.

The, who was in his 40s and believed to have been from eastern Europe, was onboard the Greencastle-based Marliona when the incident occurred at around 1:25pm, approximately 50 miles from the island. Both the Arranmore Lifeboat and the Sligo-based R118 Coast Guard Helicopter were immediately tasked. However, the lifeboat was stood down as short-time later due to the distance it would have to travel to reach the scene. A spokesperson for the Irish Coast Guard told Donegal Daily that the Marliona had a rescue boat onboard and recovered the man almost immediately. Fellow crew members performed CPR on the victim until the helicopter arrived.

The man was airlifted to Sligo University Hospital where he was subsequently pronounced dead. The deceased man is believed to have been living in Donegal for a number of years.

The Coroner has been informed and a post-mortem examination will be carried out by the State Pathologist, the results of which will determine the course of the Garda investigation. It is understood An Garda Síochána’s only involvement is likely to be the preparation of a file for a Coroner’s Inquest.

The Marine Casualty Investigation Board (MCIB) and the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) have been notified.
