A man is fighting for life after he was attacked with a machete at a Melbourne car wash.

The 43-year-old had just turned up for work at the Elite Car Wash on Mount Alexander Rd in Essendon when another car pulled up at the entrance about 9am on Thursday.

A man armed with a machete approached the victim and slashed his hand.

The car wash employee tried to run away but the offender attacked him again with the machete in the upper body.

The offender fled in a car, leaving the victim for dead.

The employee was treated at the scene before being rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police say they believe the attack was targeted.

It’s also believed a driver was waiting for the attacker in a getaway car described as a dark SUV.

The offender was wearing dark clothing and a balaclava.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information or dashcam/CCTV footage has been urged to come forward.
