U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents arrested 81 people in Charlotte during their first day of an immigration enforcement operation known as “Charlotte’s Web.”Â
WCNC reported that the commander overseeing the operation, Gregory K. Bovino, described on X that those arrested Saturday had “significant criminal and immigration history.”Â
Charlotte is the first city where CBP said it will spearhead immigration enforcement without coordinating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. While ICE has conducted arrests in Charlotte before, that agency did not coordinate with CBP on Saturday.Â
The agency has not released detailed information about the nature of the operation or its duration in Charlotte.
