A woman in her 80s has died after getting into difficulty while swimming in Co Wicklow on Saturday.

Greystones and Wicklow Coast Guard units were at the scene at Magherabeg Beach, along with the Dublin-based Coast Guard helicopter R116.

The alarm was raised at around 2pm yesterday, with a search and recovery operation carried out by the Coast Guard, assisted by gardaí.

The woman’s body was recovered from the water at around 4pm.

A second person was rescued from the water and taken to hospital.

The body of the woman was removed to the mortuary at St Columcille’s Hospital in Loughlinstown, Co Dublin.

A postmortem is set to be carried out in due course, and a file will be prepared for the Coroner’s Court.

Investigations are ongoing, a garda spokesperson said.
