While there is a general feeling of euphoria in Ireland on the back of the big win in Budapest yesterday, you would imagine that there are very contrasting emotions in Hungary as their team botched an opportunity to reach a first World Cup since 1986.
Hungary came into this campaign expecting to achieve at least a play-off place. That was a belief they still held going into Sunday’s fixture, needing only a draw to ensure a top two finish in the group.
Considering the fact that they took an early lead in the game, and still led as the contest entered the final ten minutes, their failure to get over the line against Ireland will no doubt be seen as massive failure.

Dunphy Had Issue With Dominik Szoboszlai Behaviour In Ireland Vs Hungary
Hungary’s lack of killer edge is sure to be a talking point in the aftermath of this fixture, although some were unimpressed with their conduct right from the start of the game.
Brian Kerr questioned their antics in the closing stages, while Eamon Dunphy has picked out their star player for particular criticism.
Writing in the Irish Mirror, Dunphy suggested that Dominik Szoboszlai’s behaviour against Ireland was not befitting of the occasion.
Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai took over early on and was walking around with the ball, knocking it sideways…
If he believes that he is cleverer than he actually is, maybe Sunday he learned a valuable lesson that will stand to him for the rest of his career – that he cannot produce that type of performance, because it can backfire on you spectacularly…
Hungary were maybe banking on the fact that they could take the piss out of us…
You have got to be professional with so much at stake, but five minutes in Szoboszlai was trying to slow things down and was doing stupid things with the ball.
The Liverpool star played very well for much of the game against Ireland, although his walking pace at times throughout the contest was certainly a questionable approach.
In any case, he and his teammates will be left to wonder what might have been on the back of this result. As for Ireland, they will head into March’s play-off full of confidence after two excellent performances.
