A Mississauga man is facing nearly two dozen charges after police say that he trafficked multiple individuals, at one point even forcing one of the victims into a marriage with another person for his own financial gain.

Police say that the suspect “procured and trafficked victims” across Ontario starting in March 2017, including one who was under the age of 18.

Investigators say that the suspect advertised sexual services online and then took the proceeds from the victims.

It is further alleged that the suspect used violence to control his victims by assaulting and choking them. He is also accused of sexually assaulting one victim and forcing another victim to marry someone for his financial gain, police say.

Project Magnolia, a joint investigation between Hamilton and York police began in May 2024 and eventually led to the arrest of a suspect.

Jamiel Smith, 34, is being charged with 21 offences related to human trafficking, including forced marriage. A full list of charges can be found here.

Police say that investigators believe there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward.
