A man has been shot dead by police after stabbing a man in the neck and threatening a woman north of Brisbane.

Officers responded to reports a 54-year-old man had been stabbed by a 26-year-old at a Beerburrum Road at Caboolture just after 3:40am.

Police said the armed man fled the scene on foot and was found by officers threatening a 28-year-old woman woman on Margaret Street.

Detective Superintendent Ben Fadian said police attempted to negotiate with the man but he continued to threaten the woman and posed a risk to the public. 

He was shot by an officer and died at the scene.

Detective Superintendent Fadian said initial investigations indicated there was a “loose association” between the three people involved, but it did not appear any of them were in an intimate relationship. 

He said it appeared the incident between the men involved a disturbance, but the reason behind it was unclear. 

Detective Superintendent Fadian said it was also unclear why the 26-year-old went to Margaret Street, which is about 600 metres from the location of the initial stabbing.

The shooting is being investigated by the Ethical Standards Command, with oversight from the Crime and Corruption Commission and the Queensland coroner.

The 54-year-old man was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital by paramedics with potentially life-threatening injuries. 

The 28-year-old woman sustained an arm laceration and was assessed by paramedics but declined transport. 

Police shoot man armed with knife in Far North Queensland

A man has been shot by police in a separate incident in Cairns.

Police responded to reports a man was armed with a knife at the intersection of Elphinstone Street and Ramsey Drive in Kanimbla at about 10:30am.

Police said an officer shot the man after he approached them with the weapon.

Medical assistance was immediately provided and he was taken to the Cairns Hospital in a critical condition.

Two crime scenes have been declared, and Elphinstone Street and Ramsey Drive are closed.

Police say man was a ‘threat’ to woman and public

The matter is being investigated by the Ethical Standards Command after the 26-year-old man was shot dead by police.

The investigation will have oversight from the Crime and Corruption Commission and the Queensland coroner.

Detective Superintendent Fadian says the man presented a “threat to the female person in the street and he also a presented a threat to the public”.

He says there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Circumstances of stabbing still under investigation

Initial investigations indicate the 26-year-old stabbed the 54-year-old man in the neck.

He was transported to hospital.

Detective Superintendent Fadian says the circumstances of the stabbing are still under investigation.

He says only the males were present at the initial stabbing incident.

The woman was in Margaret Street, about 600 metres from where the stabbing was.

Detective Superintendent Fadian says police believe the 26-year-old man confronted her.

“At this stage the circumstances of why he went there are still under investigation,” he says.

‘Loose association’ between three involved

“At this point the information that we have is it involved a disturbance. The reasons behind that disturbance is unclear at this point.”
