Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has made his thoughts perfectly clear on Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak amid transfer links to Anfield.

Hugo Ekitike and Isak were the Premier League champions’ top two attacking targets and as the Magpies rebuffed their approach for the latter, focus turned onto Ekitike. A deal was subsequently swiftly wrapped up with Eintracht Frankfurt in a deal worth an initial £69million.

Despite that, links to Isak remained as he missed a friendly defeat to Celtic and the club’s pre-season tour of Asia with it later revealed the Swede wants to depart St James’ Park. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has also since revealed there is no chance of him joining up with the squad later this month.

Having spent at least £169.5million to sign Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Florian Wirtz, it appeared unlikely that Liverpool could fork out another triple-figure fee for Isak but the sale of Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich has made that more plausible.

The Colombia international has been the recipient of two bids from Allianz Arena with the second of those, worth £60.1million (€70m), accepted and Diaz given permission to leave Liverpool’s training camp and undergo a medical in the German capital.

An approach to Newcastle for Isak is now expected to arrive over the coming days with Fowler echoing the thoughts of many Liverpool supporters by issuing a glowing verdict of the 25-year-old.

“As a Liverpool fan, we would all love to see him, wouldn’t we?” Fowler told The RedMen TV. “When you look at the Premier League and the goals he scored last year, the types of goals and his performances, he was phenomenal. “Hopefully, he can carry that on, and hopefully it will be at Liverpool.

“If you were to pick one player from the Premier League last year who you would have wanted to sign for Liverpool, he would probably be on 90 per cent of people’s lips.

“We probably needed that pivotal striker on the pitch last season. He could be the difference if he were to come.”
