Despite life-saving efforts, the boy died on Friday night.
MAPLE PLAIN, Minn. — An 8-year-old boy is dead after drowning during a field trip in Maple Plain.
The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office said the drowning happened during a supervised field trip to Baker Park South Beach on Lake Independence on Thursday.
According to a press release, a teacher discovered the boy in 3 feet of water, and life-saving measures were performed by first responders at the scene. The child was taken to the hospital, but he later died on Friday night.
The boy was identified as Karmon Conneh of Brooklyn Park by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office.
“This is a parent’s nightmare, and our hearts are breaking for the family, as well as the teachers and kids who were on the field trip,” a Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said in a statement. “This hits close to home for many of us and we are keeping the child, their loved ones, and everyone impacted in our thoughts.”
The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating. No other information is available at this time.
