West Midlands Police has issued a major update after launching a murder probe into the fatal stabbing of a teenager in Birmingham.

Yassin Alama, 19, was knifed on Hutton Road in Handsworth at around 5.20pm on Sunday, November 16. Detectives are still searching for Oumar Traore, 17, who is wanted for questioning over the murder of Yassin.

But a 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender in Birmingham at around 1am today, Tuesday, November 18.

In a statement, police said: “We’ve arrested a man on suspicion of helping the suspect wanted over the murder of Yassin Alama, who was stabbed to death in Handsworth on Sunday evening.

“The suspect, aged 20, was arrested at around 1am today in Birmingham on suspicion of assisting an offender, as part of our investigation into the murder of Yassin Alama, who was stabbed on Hutton Road, at around 5.20pm on Sunday.

“Oumar Traore, who is wanted for murder, and Yassin Alama, who died after being stabbed.

“We are still searching for Oumar Traore, aged 17, is wanted for questioning over the murder of Yassin.

“We have made a number of attempts to arrest Traore since the death of Yassin, and continue to appeal for the public’s help to track him down.”

Jenny Birch, from the homicide team, said: “We have officers working around the clock to locate and arrest Traore.

“I’d urge him to hand himself in at his nearest police station immediately.

“Anyone who is helping him evade capture also faces arrest.

“Yassin’s family have been left absolutely devastated by what has happened, and we are continuing to update them and support them as our investigation continues.”

If anyone sees Traore, or has information about where he might be, they should not approach him but call police straight away on 999, quoting log 3135 of 16 November.
