Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value topped the 38th European Film Awards nominations with five nods on Tuesday, with Óliver Laxe’s Sirāt close behind with four nominations.

Both acclaimed featurees will be vying for Best European Film, Best European Director, and Best European Screenwriter prizes, while actors Stellan Skarsgård and Sergei López will face off in Best European Actor. Renate Reinsve is the sole nominee from the Norwegian drama that’s up for Best European Actress.

Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just An Accident and Mascha Schilinski’s Sound of Falling are both tied with three nominations apiece for film, director, and screenwriter.

This is the second year that documentaries and animated features will compete alongside fiction films in the Best European Film category, with the category having 15 nominees. The feature length French cartoons Arco and Little Amelie or the Character of Rain — both of which are also Oscar contenders — made the cut. Nominated documentaries include Afternoons of Solitude from Spain and France, and Riefenstahl from Germany.

Winners of the 2025 European Film Awards will be announced on Jan. 17 in Berlin. Liv Ullmann will receive the EFA Lifetime Achievement Award and Alice Rohrwacher will collect the European Achievement in World Cinema prize.
