A teenager has died after getting into difficulty in the sea in Whitley Bay. On Thursday afternoon, emergency services and rescue teams came to the aid of 13-year-old Edie Smart at Whitley Bay beach.
A major rescue operation was launched and Edie, from Monkseaton, was able to be recovered to shore, where she received medical attention before being airlifted to hospital. Sadly, despite the efforts of medical staff, she died on Monday.
Her next of kin are currently being supported by specially trained officers. Det Ch Insp Emma Smith of Northumbria Police said: “This is an extremely tragic incident, and our deepest condolences go to Edie’s family and friends.

“Our specially trained officers will continue to provide them with the support they need at this time. We ask that their privacy be respected as they begin to come to terms with the loss of their loved one.”
During the incident, a police cordon was put in place on the promenade near Spanish City car park. HM Coastguard, the Great North Air Ambulance Service, the North East Ambulance Service were all involved in efforts to rescue Edie.
