Reform UK’s former leader in Wales will be sentenced today
for taking bribes to make statements in favour of Russia while he was a Member
of the European Parliament (MEP).
Nathan Gill, who was an MEP for six years, pleaded guilty in
September to eight counts of bribery spanning a period from 6 December 2018 to
18 July 2019.
He was paid thousands of pounds to give TV interviews in
favour of a key ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin and to make speeches
in the European Parliament.
The prosecution found WhatsApp messages between Gill and a
pro-Russia politician in Ukraine, Oleg Voloshyn.
Gill is expected to be jailed when his sentence is handed
down at the Old Bailey in Central London later today, with the hearing due to begin around 10:30 GMT.
