Grizzly bear attacks schoolchildren and teachers in B.C., two in critical condition

Multiple teachers using bear spray and a bear banger furiously fought off a grizzly bear that had emerged from the woods to attack a group of schoolchildren on a field trip on B.C.’s central coast, authorities said Friday.

Four people – one adult and three children – were badly hurt in the Thursday attack, the B.C. Conservation Officer Service said. They were airlifted to hospital, with two in critical condition, BC Emergency Health Services said.

Samuel Schooner, elected Chief of the Nuxalk Nation, called the teachers heroes, saying they responded bravely in the moment and ensured the outcome was not much worse.

“This unprecedented grizzly bear attack occurred without provocation and has resulted in significant trauma to our community,” he said.

The children on the field trip were in Grades 4 and 5 and the chief said all proper protocols were followed. Multiple teachers intervened.

The conservation service worked throughout the night and into Friday to try to find the bear, but none was seen. The service said it appeared the bear had been injured previously.

B.C. conservation official delivered a briefing on Friday (Nov. 21) after a grizzly bear attacked a group of elementary school students and teachers in Bella Coola, B.C. Two suffered critical injuries and another two were sent to Vancouver emergency care for serious injuries.

People in the area near the attack have been told to stay indoors until further notice.

Veronica Schooner told The Canadian Press her 10-year-old son Alvarez was on the field trip. The animal came so close to her son “he even felt its fur.”

“He was running for his life,” she said.

Ms. Schooner said a lot of people tried to halt the attack but one male teacher “got the whole brunt of it” and was among the people taken by helicopter from the scene.

She added that Alvarez was “traumatized” by the attack on his friends, and three children were among those with major injuries.

“He said that bear ran so close to him, but it was going after somebody else,” said Ms. Schooner.

She said that when she picked up Alvarez, he was “in shock,” his shoes muddy from his ordeal.

“Everybody was in shock at the school. A lot of people were crying, and I don’t know, I just wanted my son, and I grabbed him, and then I took him home.”
