A selection of meats has been recalled across two Aussie states this week. Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) declared that a variety of Gotzinger Smallgoods sliced ham items could make people sick.
FSANZ claimed the items were sold at various retail stores and butcher shops across New South Wales and Queensland, and there were fears they had microbial contamination. In a statement to Yahoo Lifestyle, Gotzinger Smallgoods disputed this.
“These products are food service only and not sold to retail,” it said.

The company said even though the products weren’t likely to be available to the public, it felt it was best to issue the recall in the “interest of public safety”.
“Any products in question are sliced and separate to all other Gotzinger Smallgoods products. No other products have been affected by this recall.
“We would like to thank our distributors who immediately removed products from the market.
“We remain fully committed to the highest food safety standards and are reviewing our processes to ensure that our products and operations remain an exemplar in the industry.”
What were the affected products?
FSANZ said consumers “should not eat this product” and that they should “return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund”.
Any consumers concerned about their health have been urged to seek medical advice.
The food safety authority revealed five products were included in the recall:
Sliced Silverside 1kg (All use-by dates up to and including 20 December, 2025)
Roast Beef Sliced 1kg (All use-by dates up to and including 13 December, 2025)
Provincial Ham Sliced 1kg (All use-by dates up to and including 5 December, 2025)

What was the issue with the meats?
FSANZ said these meats had possible listeria monocytogenes contamination, which can make people very sick if ingested.
The pathogenic bacteria can particularly affect pregnant women, unborn babies, neonates, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals.
It added that the general population can also become ill from consuming food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
People with those meats in their households can contact Gotzinger Smallgoods on 07 5549 3955 or send an email to sales@gotzinger.com.

Correction: A previous version of this story claimed the recalled meat items were sold at Woolworths, however the supermarket has confirmed this is not the case.
