Injured Australian skipper Pat Cummins has revealed he is a chance to return for the second Test at The Gabba in what would be a huge boost after Josh Hazlewood was ruled out.

Cummins was ruled out of the first Test in Perth with a lower back injury and was in doubt for the second Test at The Gabba starting on December 4.

However, Cummins revealed in commentary on Fox Cricket on day two of the Perth Test that his recovery was tracking well.

“It’s feeling good,” Cummins told Kayo Sports’ Ashes live coverage.

“I had a couple of good sessions in Perth this week, so having a big day where I’d bowl around 10 overs then a couple of quieter day and then going again.

“It’s on track and pulling up pretty well. (I’m) half a chance for the next game.

“I’ll have a couple more bowls and then there could be about two weeks before the next one the way this one is going.

“I’m pretty hopeful and it’s probably better than it was a few weeks ago.”

Cummins revealed he will wait to make a final call on his fitness until closer to the second Test, but is hopeful of taking the field.

“It’ll be a collaboration between myself and the physios, the selectors and the doctors,” Cummins said.

“There’s a few things at play, and obviously I’m not coming off a lot of cricket so you want to get a bit of a feel, have a look at the wicket and work out how you think the game may pan out and make a decision.

“If I don’t want to play, no one is going to put me in that position.”

Cummins’ availability would be a huge boost for Australia, given Hazlewood has been rubbed out of the first two Tests with a hamstring injury that could rule him out for the entire series.

Code Sports reported Hazlewood, who did not travel to Perth after injuring a hamstring in a Sheffield Shield match a week ago, is unlikely to return in time for the Gabba Test.

If Cummins is fit, Perth debutant Brendan Doggett would likely make way, despite impressing with five wickets in Perth.
