The road was blocked while Fire and Emergency New Zealand worked at the scene.
A police spokesperson said members of the public can expect to see a police presence in the area this morning as they investigate the scene to determine the circumstances.
St John was also called to treat people for smoke inhalation
A fire investigator was called to the site and will return later today.
