We’re all set for what should be an entertaining game on Saturday evening.
Wannabe Man City host actual Man City in the battle of two oil state-fueled heavyweights, though the former could theoretically find themselves in the Premier League‘s bottom three by the time this one kicks off.
Of course, we don’t expect Newcastle to finish up anywhere near the danger zone, but with the Geordies beating City just once in a home league match since ADUG’s takeover of the Citizens in 2008, it could get worse before it gets better.
Will it be another Erling Haaland show? Will Anthony Gordon be hounded by more Claire Balding lookalike memes? Some things are nailed on and PP tipster Andrew Beasley is also inevitable. Here he runs the rule over Saturday’s teatime showpiece and all the rich drama it promises, with several tips for this Newcastle v Man City Bet Builder.

Is the title race back on? Manchester City chipped two off Arsenal’s six point lead in the last round of fixtures. As City travel to Newcastle the day before the latest north London derby, the pressure could be on Arsenal when they host the best away team in the 2025/26 Premier League.
Seriously, lads, it’s Tottenham. But City need to win at St James’ Park first. Newcastle are having a weird season. They can barely buy a goal on the road yet have won their last five home matches in all competitions with only one goal conceded.
Despite this fortress-like record in front of their adoring fans, Eddie Howe’s side are the underdogs in the betting. If you predict the match using expected goal data alone, the Magpies should be very slight favourites to win. Their only defeat in the last four meetings in the north east came via a 91st minute goal too.
City’s away form isn’t flawless either. They took just one point from three games against teams that start the weekend in the top 11 in the table. Newcastle sitting 14th helps explain why the visitors are expected to win. But there is a decent chance the teams cancel each other out, as they did when drawing 1-1 at St James’ Park last season.
Newcastle’s two home defeats in the league came via goals in the 96th and 100th minutes, leaving them waiting for their first draw. If City haven’t seen crucial goals occur quite so late, their 4-0 win at bottom side Wolves is their only away match settled by more than one goal.
Let’s go for a draw in the Match Odds market. There’s plenty of room to sit on this fence if you want to join me.
Both teams to score? Yes
Another reason to opt for a stalemate is that 1-1 is the favourite in the Correct Score market at the time of writing.
City have conceded four goals in their five away games this season, while the Magpies’ only home clean sheets in the league came against the bottom two teams at the start of the day.
A bet on both teams scoring paid out in six of the previous seven league meetings of these clubs in Newcastle. As the home side have scored in every game at St James while the Cityzens have only posted one blank on the road, back this bet once again.
Erling Haaland to score anytime
You’ll be assuming Erling Haaland is the choice for a goal scorer bet, and you’ll be right.
If there’s one word of caution, it’s that he’s only scored once against Newcastle in the Premier League. Aston Villa are the only side Haaland has faced five times in the competition without netting more than once. Indeed, he drew a blank when City lost at Villa Park in their previous away game.
Good luck picking someone else to get you a goal here, though. Liverpool limited Haaland to his joint-lowest (non-penalty) expected goal figure in a league game at the Etihad last time out and he still scored anyway.
Back Haaland to score. It’s the part of this prediction that feels straightforward.
Under 10.5 Corners
Six of the last seven league meetings of these teams saw the corner count hit double figures. The exception? Three at the Etihad in August 2024.
If it won’t go that low here, the form of the teams suggests there could be fewer than usual for a clash between these teams at Newcastle. Just five of the Magpie’s 11 league games have featured at least 10 corners.
City haven’t been producing many of the road either, but if we take Under 10.5 Corners then we at least have a little room for manoeuvre.
Over 4.5 Cards
There have generally been a lot of cards in this head-to-head. At least six in four of the last six meetings, in fact.
Our referee should ensure we get close to that mark once again. Sam Barrott leads the Premier League for yellow cards per game this season, flashing a whopping 5.3 on average.
In a (black and) white hot St James’ Park atmosphere, this match should be nice and spiky. Ref Barrott should deliver Over 4.5 Cards, if not a few more. It’ll be Christmas soon, after all.
