An 80-year old man has allegedly been slashed by a 16-year-old with a knife at a Melbourne train station during an attempted armed robbery.

Police say the man was in the car park at Lilydale train station at 1.50pm yesterday when a teen on a scooter demanded his wallet at knifepoint.

When the man refused to hand it over, the teen allegedly slashed him.

He was taken to a medical centre with non-life threatening injuries.

The 16-year-old from Yarra Ranges was arrested on nearby Main Street.

He has been charged with attempted armed robbery, recklessly cause injury, intentionally cause injury, posses controlled weapon and common law assault.

He was remanded to appear at a children’s court at a later date.
