Police to investigate if incident was ‘random’

Superintendent Moore says she does not, at this stage, think the incident was “random”.

Young person under arrest

Offender believed to have ‘fled’, police say

After the other young men approached, conversations took place and a knife was produced, the superintendent says.

The 17yo was stabbed once in the thigh and suffered “some fairly significant injuries”.

“As a result of that, the offender has fled the scene and a number of female witnesses who were in the park at the time came and rendered aid,” she says.

The teenage boy died at the scene.

Community in mourning

Mayor of The Hills Shire Council Michelle Byrne said she was “deeply saddened” to learn of the teenager’s death.

“This is a heartbreaking and senseless loss of a young life, and my thoughts, prayers and heartfelt condolences are with the family, friends, and all who are affected by this tragedy,” she said.

“Our community is strong, compassionate and resilient and in moments like these we must look out for one another,” she said.

Federal MP Michelle Rowland, whose electorate of Greenway includes Rouse Hill, said she was “deeply saddened” to learn of the incident.

“My thoughts and deepest condolences are with the young boy’s family during this extremely difficult time,” Ms Rowland said in a statement.

“There is no place in our community for these acts of senseless violence, and I know this news will be particularly distressing for local families.”

State MP for Kellyville Ray Williams said the boy’s death was a “dreadful tragedy”.

“Sadly, youth-related crime and especially crimes involving knives are becoming so much more prevalent.

“Whilst I don’t want to in any way distract from the outpouring of grief that the community will be going through, and especially the family of this young teenager, we really as parliamentarians and leaders have to step up.”
