Greens senator Mehreen Faruqi has risen to speak on the censuring of Pauline Hanson as one of two Muslim senators in the upper house.
“Finally, after three decades, after three decades of piling on hate and racism, on Muslims, on Asians, on people of colour. Finally, at least some of us in this chamber want to hold Senator Hanson to account,” Faruqi said.

“Of course, decades, decades of harm that One Nation and Senator Hanson has caused to people of colour, to Muslims, to Asians by her racism and dog-whistling won’t be taken away by this motion, but it is, it is a start.”
Nationals senator Matt Canavan began heckling Faruqi over her criticisms of “white people”, saying the senator was applying double standards.
This received a rebuke from Senate president Sue Lines who suggested Canavan leave the chamber if he could not be quiet.
