Tributes are being paid to a kind Cork grandfather who tragically died following a house fire in the city over the weekend. Gary McCarthy, 62, passed away at Cork University Hospital after firefighters rescued him from his home on Noonan Road in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The fire was called in by a Bord Gáis employee at around 3:30 am on Sunday morning, with crews from the Cork City Fire Brigade on the scene within four minutes. The brave first responders donned oxygen masks and forced their way inside the property. Once inside, they located Mr McCarthy and brought him outside to administer treatment while waiting on paramedics.

Members of the National Ambulance Service arrived minutes later and took over treatment at the scene before transporting him to Cork University Hospital, where he later passed away.

Friends and family members have shared emotional tributes on social media, describing Gary as a kind gentleman who was always keen to stop for a chat. The owner of The Gallows Bar, located just a short walk from the property on Noonan Road, also paid tribute to Gary on social media overnight.

They said: “The most awful news imaginable today, rest in peace to a dear friend and neighbour to all who knew him, many great memories with Gary and his family, who are all in our thoughts now as they try to process what’s happened.

“Our community spirit is needed here to support them at this incredibly difficult time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.”

The local community has been left shaken by the tragic incident, and many have come forward to share kind words with the McCarthy family following Gary’s passing.

One person said: “Terrible news, an absolute gent and lovely family, thinking of all his kids, may he rest in peace.”

Another added: “Such a lovely guy and neighbour. Always had a smile and a hello for everyone. My condolences to all the family at this very difficult time. May you RIP, Gary.”

Councillor Dan Boyle commended the emergency services for their swift response on Sunday and offered condolences to the McCarthy family.

He told CorkBeo: “The circumstances surrounding this death are very sad. I understand that Gary was a respected member of the community, and I would like to thank the emergency services for their efforts.”

It’s understood that funeral details will be announced in due course. Rest in Peace.
