As employees plan their holidays, cybercriminals plot to exploit staffing disruptions, which make the holiday season a particularly risky time for businesses in Japan, experts warn.

In Asia-Pacific, 55% of ransomware attacks occurred on a weekend or holiday, while in the world average, 52% did, and 60% followed a significant business event, such as a merger, according to a report released Monday by Semperis, an artificial-intelligence powered cybersecurity firm.

During this time period, government, finance, IT, education, manufacturing, health care, energy, travel and transportation sectors were particularly vulnerable.
