Toronto police have arrested a delivery driver following a hit-and-run that left a female pedestrian with life-threatening injuries in the city’s downtown core.
Officers were called to Beverley Street and Dundas Street around 4:15 p.m. Monday after reports that a woman had been struck by a vehicle. Paramedics transported the victim, a woman in her 40s, to the hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.
Investigators say the driver fled the scene after the collision. Police later obtained video footage of a white Hino truck believed to be involved and traced it back to the delivery company. From there, officers identified and arrested the driver.
Olusegun Stephen Olayemiu, 56, of Toronto, is facing charges, including leaving the scene of an accident causing bodily harm and careless driving causing bodily harm. He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday morning for a bail hearing.
Police tell 680 NewsRadio it’s believed the woman was crossing in the crosswalk at Beverley Street and Grange Avenue when she was struck. She remains in the hospital in critical condition.
Beverley Street was closed between Dundas Street West and Grange Avenue for several hours but has since reopened.
