Police are investigating a serious crash that happened Tuesday morning in a southeast Calgary industrial area.
Emergency crews were called to the intersection of 52 Street and 61 Avenue SE at around 8:45 a.m. for reports of a collision between a large truck and a car.
Investigators say a 2007 Peterbilt semi-truck with a flatbed trailer was travelling northbound on 52 Street, approaching 61 Avenue SE. The truck, operated by a man in his 50s, collided with a 2007 Volkswagen Passat that had turned across the northbound lanes from the southbound left-turn lane.
Police believe the Volkswagen, driven by a man in his 30s with two passengers, attempted the turn on a solid green signal and encroached into the path of the semi. The truck struck the car on its right side.
The semi driver was not hurt and remained at the scene. All three occupants of the Volkswagen were transported to hospital.
The driver and a rear passenger, a man in his 20s, sustained minor injuries. The front passenger, a man in his 30s, suffered life-threatening injuries.
Impairment, speed, and road conditions are not believed to be factors in the collision.
Several roads in the area were closed following the crash but have since reopened. The investigation is ongoing.
